![]() A little more sense of the time period might have been nice, but the story hurtles along so well, that's not a real problem.ĭARK HARVEST is well worth reading, and if you're in the mood for a Halloween novel tonight and have a copy on your shelves, you should definitely give it a try. I usually don't care much for books written in present tense, but if an author can make it work, I don't mind, and Partridge does. But Partridge turns it into something else with a number of nice plot twists and some excellent writing. It seemed like something out of a low-budget horror movie (not that there's anything wrong with that). To be honest, I wasn't too impressed with that setup. Opposing him are all the boys from the ages of sixteen to nineteen, who compete to see who can kill the October Boy (or Sawtooth Jack or Ol' Hacksaw Face, as the monster is sometimes called). It seems that every Halloween, a pumpkin-headed monster known as the October Boy rise from the cornfields outside of town and for reasons unknown tries to reach the church in the middle of town. ![]() Set in 1963 in a quiet Midwestern town, it's about a strange ritual called the Run. It was a good choice.ĭARK HARVEST is one of those novels that takes place in only a few hours of time, something I always like. I decided to read Norman Partridge's DARK HARVEST for two reasons: he has a reputation as a very good writer, and it was handy, sitting in a stack just a couple of feet from my computer. Since today is Halloween, it seemed appropriate to post about a Halloween novel. (This post originally appeared in slightly different form on October 31, 2011, also a Monday.) ![]() The report also showed that these reserves would be approaching exhaustion in 2057, so that full scheduled benefits would not be payable starting shortly thereafter, without further change to the program. 2 However, that report also indicated that well before 2057, program cost would rise above the annual tax income to the program, requiring redemption of trust fund reserves to pay full benefits. This meant that under the intermediate assumptions used in that report, representing the trustees' best estimate of future experience at that time, program financing was expected to be sufficient to pay scheduled benefits in full through 2057. The 1983 Trustees Report indicated that the Social Security program was put into "actuarial balance" for the 75-year, long-range projection period. Since the last major amendments to the Social Security program were enacted in 1983, the annual reports have presented a succession of developments in the actual experience of the economy and the program benefits that show a need for more change to address the future challenges we face. Although legislative changes may sometimes appear to be decided at the last minute before a crisis, the long advance warning of financial challenges provided by the trustees in the annual reports has always promoted broad consideration of options for change that allow any eventual modification of the law to be based on sound analysis and consideration of a comprehensive view of possible changes and their effects. The longer-term analysis of the actuarial status of the Social Security trust funds provides the Congress with an essential early warning of future challenges and provides the time to make desired changes in a careful and thoughtful manner. The actuarial status of the program is intended to provide an early warning of any potential longer-term financial issues or challenges that will be facing the program. The recent financial operations and the operations projected for the next few years are a finger on the pulse of the program. The Social Security Act requires that the annual report include (1) the financial operations of the trust funds in the most recent past year, (2) the expected financial operations of the trust funds over the next 5 years, and (3) an analysis of the actuarial status of the program. The board has six members, including the Secretary of the Treasury as the managing trustee, the Secretary of Labor, the Secretary of Health and Human Services, and the Commissioner of Social Security, plus two public trustees appointed by the president and confirmed by the senate. Annual Reports by the TrusteesĮach year, starting in 1941, the Social Security Board of Trustees has presented a required report on the financial status of the program to the Congress. What is virtually certain is that the benefits that almost all Americans become entitled to and most depend on will be continued into the future with modifications deemed appropriate by their elected representatives in the Congress. The future is uncertain in many respects, and based on new information, projections of the financial status of the Social Security program vary somewhat over time. This article describes the financial status of the Social Security program, including an analysis of the concepts of solvency and sustainability and the relationship of Social Security to the overall federal unified budget. ![]() Further modifications of the program are a certainty as the Congress continues to evolve and shape this program, reflecting the desires of each new generation. The program now provides benefits to over 50 million people and is financed with the payroll taxes from over 150 million workers and their employers. ![]() ![]() Social Security provides a basic level of monthly income to workers and their families after the workers have reached old age, become disabled, or died. Since the inception of the Social Security program in 1935, scheduled benefits have always been paid on a timely basis through a series of modifications in the law that will continue. The Social Security Board of Trustees project that changes equivalent to an immediate reduction in benefits of about 13 percent, or an immediate increase in the combined payroll tax rate from 12.4 percent to 14.4 percent, or some combination of these changes, would be sufficient to allow full payment of the scheduled benefits for the next 75 years. Thus, the Congress will need to make changes to the scheduled benefits and revenue sources for the program in the future. 1 At the point where the reserves are used up, continuing taxes are expected to be enough to pay 76 percent of scheduled benefits. Old-Age, Survivors, and Disability InsuranceĪs a result of changes to Social Security enacted in 1983, benefits are now expected to be payable in full on a timely basis until 2037, when the trust fund reserves are projected to become exhausted. 3 WAY REFRIGERATOR/FREEZER 2 BURNER COOK TOP HIGH RISE GALLEY FAUCET SINGLE BOWL SINK 20,000 BTU FURNACE 12V WATER PUMP MONITOR PANEL 55 AMP CONVERTER DETACHABLE POWER CORD PORCELAIN PEDAL FLUSH TOILET CABLE AND SATELLITE READY TV ANTENNA with BOOSTER BREAKAWAY SWITCH FIRE EXTINGUISHER LP DETECTOR SMOKE DETECTOR CO DETECTOR SAFETY CHAINS DEAD BOLT DOOR LOCK GROUND FAULT PROTECTED ELECTRICAL CIRCUIT FULL COVERAGE VINYL FLOORING GLAZED COGNAC MAPLE CABINETS HARDWOOD DRAWER FRONTS with FULL EXTENSION SS BALL BEARING GUIDES DECORATIVE WINDOW TREATMENTS SHOWER CURTAIN ABS SHOWER SURROUND 80 INTERIOR HEIGHT AT PEAK MINI BLIND NEAR COOKTOP EVERGREEN DUAL DENSITY FOAM HYPOALLERGIC PILLOWTOP MATTRESS FULL BATHROOM with SEPERATE NEO ANGLE SHOWER BATHROOM VANITY with SINK AND MIRRORED MEDICINE CABINET NETTED STORAGE SOLUTIONS PACKAGE FULL ONE PIECE FIBERGLASS ROOF THAT RUNS FROM REAR BUMPER TO V CONTRASTING GRAY FIBERGLASS REAR WALL/ROOF STAINLESS STEEL WHEEL WELL COVERS PATIO LIGHT with AMBER LENS with INTERIOR SWITCH EXTERIOR 120V RECEPT FULLY LAMINATED ALUMINUM CAGE WITH DENSE FOAM INSULATION RADIUS ENTRY AND OVERSIZED BAGGAGE DOORS LARGE FOLDING ENTRY ASSIST GRAB HANDLE ENTRY DOOR STEP AERODYNAMIC V-DESIGN FULLY ENCLOSED VENTED LP TANKS FULLY ENCLOSED VENTED BATTERY COMPARTMENT OVERSIZE STORAGE COMPARTMENT WITH UP TO 70 CU. Similarly, the movement from point D to E, 8 units of Good Y is to be sacrificed in order to produce an extra unit of Good X. In order to produce one extra unit of Good X, 4 units of Good Y are to be sacrificed. In the above figure, consider the movement from point A to B. This implies that for producing an extra unit of one good more and more units of other good are to be sacrificed. ![]() According to this law, with the fuller utilisation of the given resources, in order to produce an additional unit of one good, some of the resources are to be withdrawn from the production of another good. The downward sloping nature of the PPC is due to the law of increasing opportunity cost. In the words of Samuelson, Production possibility curve is that curve which represents the. A production possibility curve determines the utmost production of any two goods using a given and fixed amount of input. I think I got most of them right, but if you have any tips please let me know below.Production Possibilities Curve (PPC) refers to that curve which depicts various combinations of two goods and services that can be produced with fuller utilisation of a given level of resources in the most efficient way and with a given level of production technique.Ī PPC is downward sloping curve that is concave to the origin. The production possibility curve (PPC) shows the maximum possible quantity of goods to be produced by using limited resources. Allocative inefficiency is also wasteful because we're producing too much of a good that is not being used, while we're lacking in another. ![]() The war affected Germany's PPF by making it harder to produce goods, because they lost resources. Allocative efficiency is when the combination of goods produced is exactly what a society needs.ħ. Productive efficiency is when you can't produce more of a good without decreasing the amount that another good is produced. Diminishing marginal returns happen when you exceed the optimal limit of producing a product, thus making the marginal returns drop.Ħ. And they shouldn't make a choice in it because it's inefficient and does not use all available resources.ĥ. A society cannot make a choice above (or out) of the PPF because they don't have enough resources to do so. Everything inside the curve is inefficient and everything outside is impossible.Ĥ. Because the curve shows the most efficient ways an economy can produce the products, using all the given resources. It shows businesses and national economies the optimal production levels of two distinct capital goods competing for the same resources in production, and the opportunity cost associated with either decision. A PPF illustrates the efficient ways an economy can produce two products, with their available resources.ģ. The production possibility frontier is an economic model and visual representation of the ideal production balance between two commodities given finite resources. A comparative advantage is when a country can produce a good faster and/or cheaper than another country, giving them an advantage over that good.Ģ. For this reason, the shape of the PPF from A to B is relatively flat, representing a relatively small drop-off in health and a relatively large gain in education.ġ. However, putting those marginal dollars into education, which is completely without resources at point A, can produce relatively large gains. Diverting some resources away from A to B causes relatively little reduction in health because the last few marginal dollars going into healthcare services are not producing much additional gain in health. Now imagine that some of these resources are diverted from healthcare to education, so that the economy is at point B instead of point A. Figure 17.3 Comparative Advantage in Roadway and Seaside. People are having cosmetic surgery on every part of their bodies, but no high school or college education exists. Roadway’s production possibilities curve in Panel (a) is the same as the one in Figure 17.1 Roadway’s Production Possibilities Curve and Figure 17.2 Measuring Opportunity Cost in Roadway. For example, children are seeing a doctor every day, whether they are sick or not, but not attending school. This situation would be extreme and even ridiculous. At point A, all available resources are devoted to healthcare and no resources are left for education. To understand why the PPF is curved, start by considering point A at the top left-hand side of the PPF. ![]() And as more species have become endangered or threatened due to poaching, trophy hunters, disease and loss of habitat, zoos have stepped up their conservation efforts. Those concerns have given rise to a strong anti-captivity movement: At the Los Angeles Zoo, activists held rallies in April and May to “ free Billy the elephant,” nearly 18 months after City Council members Paul Koretz and Mitch O’Farrell offered the latest motion to remove the Asian elephant from the zoo. They have been described as “ prisons for animals,” castigated for the wildlife’s depressed appearance and rightly condemned for cases of animal mistreatment and death. ![]() Additionally, make sure your mangoes and other ingredients are properly chilled to maintain the desired temperature.
